Our Story
Can you imagine what it would feel like to no longer hear your child's voice, hear their laugh, watch them grow.
Can you imagine what it feels like to no longer have recent photos; to keep recycling old ones, finding ways to keep them fresh.
Imagine the feeling of having a great, utterly awesome gift and then it is gone. Like a candle in the wind. Snuffed out. Extinguished.
Such is the reality of our existence.
In June 2007, our lives changed forever. A beautiful baby came into our lives. He was everything a parent would want and lived a full life like most kids usually do. He was vibrant, kind, extremely brilliant and loved his family to bits. He had dreams of becoming a doctor and an astronaut and if he were to tell you that, you would take one look at him and totally believe him.
10 years later, our lives changed again, in the other direction. Our boisterous young man was diagnosed with cancer 4 months after his 10th birthday. This cancer is rare. So rare it has never before been on file as diagnosed in our home country of Nigeria. So rare that even doctors would rack their brains when they hear of the name- Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT)
We got thrust right into the chaos of the childhood cancer world. It is a world no parent would ever wish to be a part of and for us, this eventually meant practically fleeing with our dying child thousands of miles across the oceans…to the United States where, because of the level of care he received, we were able to have him with us for another 2 years. Childhood cancer is brutal and yet, every day many children are getting diagnosed. In fact, if the data is to be believed, more and more children are getting diagnosed.
Our organization’s goal is to raise awareness for childhood cancer - to let people know it can happen to anyone. To have people understand that childhood cancer knows no age, creed, sex, status or race.
And in cultures like Nigeria, to make people know that childhood cancer exists, it is real and can be treated and most times, cured.
Further, we support the families who have had their lives turned upside down in a twinkle of an eye and for the cross-section that eventually lose their children to the menace that is childhood cancer.
Some societies are far ahead of others, which is why our programs in Nigeria extends to financial support for indigent children fighting cancer through the hospitals in the hope to have at least, a decent remission rate.
Another big issue in Nigeria is the low suspicion rate of cancer amongst healthcare workers and it is part of our mission to work to address this through education and trainings.
Furthermore, supporting research is a big goal for our organization because we believe it is only with more scientific research and breakthroughs that we can hope to have more of our children in remission. We really believe that what we understand, we can cure, and understanding it begins with studying it. So join us in supporting childhood cancer research. #becausechildrengetcancertoo
